Ben van Dijk:
First of all, I think the contrabass trombone deserves his place in the trombone family, both in the symphony orchestra but also in the trombone
ensemble repertoire. In Germany almost all big orchestra's and all Opera houses make use of the contrabass trombone. Some symphonic works with original contrabass parts are:
The Alpine Symphony - R Strauss Canticum Sarcrum - Stravinski. 3 Symphony - Glinka Gurrelieder - Schoenberg
many works by Krenek,Henze and Bernd Alois Zimmermann have contraparts. Varese, Ligeti,
Boulez and Schnitke make use of the contra very often.
Believe me, there is much more. In the Opera repertoire there is even more written for the CBT. Most of these parts are playable on the basstrombone
but the special sound of the contra ads so much to it. Famous opera's with great contrabass parts are:
Der Ring des Nibelungen - Wagner Othello and Falstaf - Verdi Salome and Elektra - R. Strauss
Tosca and Turandot - Puccini But also in Bernd Alois Zimmerman's "die Soldaten" there is a crazy contrabass trombone part.
About the different contrabasses available, I like to say, there are
some very good instruments on the market.
